Artists Profile

artist
Laila Khan
Born in the year 1970, Laila Khan has firmly established herself as an artist of repute Even as a child, colours fascinated her and created a need for artistic expression She started drawing and painting right from her school years She graduated from Sophia College, Mumbai with a BA in English Literature From there she went on to gain training in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in London

One of the most unique things about her work is the fact that she chooses never to title them She strongly believes that titling a work takes away the viewer’s freedom to interpret and derive their own meaning from any work

Laila had her first solo exhibition in 2001 with Arushi Arts at Visual Art Gallery, New Delhi Her second solo show was held at the Institute of Contemporary Indian Art in 2007 The show was titled ‘Dreams have no titles’ and its aim was to depict the feminine predicament by painting the many women in iconic notions In 2009 she again went to London to study creative and express painting at the St Martin’s School of Art and Design Some of the artists that inspired her when she was studying in the UK were Gustav Klimt and Salvador Dali Amongst Indian artists, she really admires the work of Anjolie Ela Menon

Laila time and again goes back to the theme of the female body and exploring different ways of depicting it In 2012 Laila was invited to be part of a group show called ‘Pulse of Abstraction’ along with several international artists at the Agora Gallery in New York For this show, she exhibited her famous Ganesh and Portrait series in Gold leaf and acrylic
