Lancelot Ribeiro
The Indian Expressionist painter, Lancelot Ribeiro (1933-2010) was born in Bombay but had ancestral roots in Goa He first travelled to Britain in 1950 to study accountancy, but soon began cultivating creative interests, which included life drawing at Saint Martin's School of Art, jewelry manufacture and working unofficially as his brother’s studio assistant He was also writing poetry

He returned to India in 1955 to work in life insurance but had aspirations of becoming a poet, before painting took hold His debut exhibition in Bombay’s Artist Aid Centre in 1961 was a sell-out and attracted collector interest, most notably from Tata to paint a mural for the offices of the then Chairman and Chief Executive of Tata Iron and Steel, JRD Tata By the end of 1962, he had held ten exhibitions across India before moving permanently to Britain

He co-founded the Indian Painters Collective, UK in 1963, the first body of its kind outside of India advocating for artists from the subcontinent, which eventually evolved into Indian Artists UK in 1978/79

Ribeiro is posthumously recognized for his unique experimental approach to his materials His experimentation with early polyvinyl acetate and conventional oil paints, the forerunners of modern acrylic paints positioned him as “the godfather of generations of artists using acrylics as an alternative to oils”  (The Times, 2011)

His work, produced over six decades of an artistic career, embodies a wide range of expressive artworks It includes surrealist drawings, wood sculptures, miniatures, compositional townscapes, ceramics and graphic art often seeking to convey a literary message

In an undated diary note, Ribeiro described his mission was “painting impulsively, compulsively, endlessly, tired, tirelessly with or without joy”
