Latika Katt
Latika Katt's artistic foundation was established in Dehradun and further honed at Banaras Hindu University and M. S. University, Baroda, where in 1971 she became the first female to win a gold medal in sculpture. She later studied at the Slade School of Art, London. Deeply influenced by Auguste Rodin, Katt was dedicated to capturing the inner 'being' of her subjects, even studying human anatomy closely for her art. She sculpted modern Indian art figures like Ramkinkar Baij and N. S. Bendre. The 1970s saw her pioneering use of non-traditional, economically viable materials such as cow dung and paper, alongside prestigious commissions in stone and marble.
Her distinguished career earned her numerous honours, including the national award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and the Beijing Art Biennale Award for her bronze work, Makar Sankranti. Katt also shared her expertise in teaching at Jamia Millia Islamia University. Dividing her time between Delhi and Banaras, Latika Katt left an indelible mark on Indian modern sculpture with her material innovation and profound dedication to the human form.
