Artists Profile

Laurence Jenkell
Laurence Jenkell is a French contemporary sculptor and painter. She is internationally recognised for her iconic Candy sculptures, which have become her signature artistic motif. Born in Bourges, France, she is a self-taught artist who began her creative practice in the mid-1990s, experimenting with materials such as plexiglas before expanding into bronze, aluminium, marble, Murano glass and polyester. Through years of technical research, she developed her distinctive "Wrapping" technique, transforming the simple form of a wrapped sweet into a universal symbol of childhood, memory, identity and cultural exchange.
Drawing inspiration from a childhood in which sweets were a forbidden indulgence, Jenkell elevates the candy into a monumental sculptural form that bridges Pop Art aesthetics with contemporary social commentary. Her celebrated Candy Nations series, unveiled during the 2011 G20 Summit in Cannes, reimagines national flags as brightly coloured wrapped candies, promoting themes of peace, unity and international dialogue. With time, her exploration of the twisting form has expanded into series such as DNA, butterfly, and Wrapping Twists, reflecting her fascination with science, architecture and the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.
Jenkell's monumental sculptures have been exhibited across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the United States, and are represented in numerous public, private and institutional collections worldwide.
