Lita Cabellut
A Netherlands based multidisciplinary artist, Lita Cabellut was born in the Spanish village of Aragon in 1961 Her childhood was stricken by extreme poverty and she grew up on the streets of Barcelona before being adopted by a Catalan family when she was twelve years old During this phase of life, she discovered the Prado Museum where seeing paintings of old masters such as paintings of Goya, Velázquez, Ribera and Rembrandt deeply inspired her Such was the impact of witnessing Peter Paul Rubens' ‘The Three Graces,’ that she decided to become a painter
When Cabellut was 19 years old, she moved to the Netherlands to pursue studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and graduated in 1984 Inspired by the fresco techniques of the mediaeval era, she creates large scale monumental paintings that weave this influence in a contemporary variation and are distinguished by her trademark style of crackle painting complemented with use of lines and a unique palette Her luminescent characters are brought to life with a process which is extremely technical and yet highly personal that lends an inimitable quality and texture to her work It involves employing several layers of colour and matter from different materials With their details of their skin and expressive nuances on their faces, her compositions embody archetypal human emotions like vulnerability, sadness, fear, and defiance
