M Senathipathi
Born in 1939 in Chennai, M. Senathipathi is a distinguished Indian painter and one of the earliest members to move to the Cholamandal Artists’ Village, which is one of the most significant artist-led initiatives in modern Indian art. Trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, he received his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1965, developing a strong foundation in figurative and narrative traditions.

Deeply influenced by his childhood in Chennai, Senathipathi’s artistic vocabulary draws from early memories of religious rituals, folk tales, and visual culture. His uncle, who painted images of Hindu deities, and the vibrant imagery of his family’s puja room left a lasting impression on him. These formative experiences continue to inform his work, alongside inspirations from kolam patterns, yantric diagrams, and geometric folk forms.

Senathipathi is best known for his evocative depictions of Hindu gods, mythological narratives, and rural life, which he imbues with a contemporary sensibility. His works balance the sacred and the everyday, presenting divine figures with human emotions and vulnerabilities. Executed with fluid, lyrical lines and richly orchestrated colours, his compositions often explore universal themes such as love, unity, and insecurity.

A distinctive aspect of his practice is his technique of pen and ink wash on handmade paper. Developed in the mid-1970s, this method involves working on wet surfaces to create blots, smudges, and soft sfumato effects, resulting in a translucent, stained-glass-like quality. He has also experimented with metal relief, demonstrating versatility across mediums.

In 1988, Senathipathi received a British Council grant, enabling him to travel across Europe. His works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally. Based in Chennai, he remains a significant voice in contemporary Indian art, known for merging mythology, memory, and modern expression.
