Madhav Satwalekar, born on August 13, 1915, in Lahore, stands as a doyen of Indian Art, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of the nation's artistic heritage Born into a legacy steeped in art and Vedas, Satwalekar inherited his father's prowess and embarked on a journey to carve his own niche

His artistic education took him to prestigious institutions such as the Sir JJ School of Art and further to Europe, where he studied at the Florence Academy in Italy, Slade School in London, and Academic Grand Chamiers in Paris, winning the prestigious Mayo Medal in 1935 His artistic pursuits flourished in an era when portrait and landscape painting, infused with traditional mythological themes, enjoyed public patronage Satwalekar's contemporaries included illustrious names like A X Trindade, Agaskar, and Fernandes

Satwalekar's oeuvre began with portraits and landscapes, demonstrating a fusion of European realism and indigenous influences Over time, he evolved a highly individualized visual language, marked by lucid palettes, decisive draftsmanship, and a keen appreciation of the sensuous female form

In 1945, Satwalekar held his first exhibition at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, a testament to his refined talent Subsequently, he showcased his work in over 30 solo exhibitions across Europe, the Middle East, Uganda, Kenya, Zanzibar, and India In 1998, he exhibited watercolors at Sans Tache Art Gallery, revealing architectural views of Rajasthan infused with vibrant local life

In the seventies and eighties, Satwalekar served as the Director of Art, Maharashtra State, and co-founded the Indian Art Institute to promote art awareness His influence extended beyond the canvas; he authored articles and booklets on art
