Manoj Vyloor
Manoj Vyloor (b. 1973, Kochi, Kerala) received his early artistic training at Kerala Kalapeetom under T. Kaladharan (1986–1991), where he gained exposure to diverse art movements, literature, and cinema. He went on to study painting at the College of Fine Arts, Kerala University (1991–1995), graduating with a BFA in Painting with distinction and first rank. Between 1995 and 1997, he specialised in printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, and also studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he worked on copper plate etchings. He completed his MA in Graphic Arts in 1997 and qualified for the UGC-NET in Visual Arts in 1998. His intellectual grounding was shaped by Indian philosophy, particularly the writings of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, and Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati.

Vyloor’s practice draws from a wide range of influences, including Vincent van Gogh and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as Ukiyo-e prints, Chinese ink painting, Indian miniatures, and Kerala mural traditions. His work moves fluidly between the mundane and the mythic, creating introspective compositions that also function as nuanced social commentary. He is known for combining charcoal drawing with acrylic painting, producing layered compositions that lend a psychedelic and surreal quality to his imagery. His paintings often juxtapose everyday scenes with symbolic or classical references, resulting in dreamlike, sometimes video game-like landscapes that heighten the sense of dislocation while reinforcing themes of love, desire, agony, ecstasy, war, and societal collapse.

Vyloor has presented several solo exhibitions over the years, including Enduring Dreams at Chitram Art Gallery, Kochi (1996), Travaux Parisiens at Galerie Bernanos, Paris (1997), Six Moments to Passivity at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda (1997), Contemplating Failures at the Gallery of Contemporary Arts, Kochi (1998), Silent Tremors at Durbar Hall Art Centre, Kochi (2002), and Losing Home at Durbar Hall Art Centre, Kochi (2016). He currently serves as a Professor of Painting at the Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur.
