Artists Profile

artist
Martand Khosla
practice that examines the changing urban landscape and the social, political, and material realities of construction in contemporary India. Born in New Delhi, he trained at the Architectural Association, London, and has led the award-winning Romi Khosla Design Studios for almost two decades. His parallel careers in architecture and art inform a practice that bridges sculpture, installation and object-making, exploring the relationship between the built environment and lived experience.

Khosla's artistic journey emerged from his engagement with India's rapidly transforming cities and the communities shaped by construction-led development. Drawing on his experience as both an architect and an observer of urban change, he investigates themes of labour, memory, identity and displacement. Interestingly, he has also sourced material directly from construction sites, most notably brick dust, that played a central role in his work. Everyday tools such as rubber stamps and industrial materials are recontextualised to reflect on systems of authority, bureaucracy and the traces they leave on individuals and communities.

Khosla has presented solo exhibitions at Nature Morte, New Delhi and Mumbai, including On the Brink (2022), 1:2500 (2019), and MesoDomain (2016). His work has also been featured in significant group exhibitions in India and internationally, and he was the recipient of the India Today Art Award for New Media Artist (2019-2020). The artist lives and works in New Delhi, where he continues to explore the intersections of architecture, materiality and contemporary urban life.
