Mrinal Dey
Born in 1979, Dey’s acrylic on canvas usually comprise of a single voluminous figure that occupies most of the frame While observing these vastly exaggerated subjects, one can observe who the masses fall prey to the allure of consumerism in modern day There is a sense of hopeless loneliness that is an underlying theme in his works The vibrant contrast in the colours used for the subject and those used for the background is purposely made to avoid any chance of a merge between the two Apart from paintings he also works through sculptures ‘Keep Smiling,’ ‘Multi View’ and ‘Through the Black Hole’ are some of his prominent worksHe was the son of the legendary painter Suhas Roy and was brought up in Shantiniketan, West Bengal Living in a surrounding that exuded joy and simplicity he was trained almost automatically under a philosophy of simplicity His early works, especially during the final years at Kala Bhawan oscillated between numerous moods After leaving Santiniketan and moving to Kolkata he started working on themes he started to divert his attention to other peripheries of human nature and now his work started exhibiting an adeptness of understanding the human mind and being which is why it was during thisphase where his works had a lot of human presence Single human beings-mainly males made him introspect His mission became to reach out to the viewer and bought realization to the fact that contemporary art movement in India was not integrated His style is simple as he confident that the so called technical jugglery does not lead the viewer to any point of contentment
