Mrinalini Mukherjee
Mukherjee was born in Mumbai in 1949 to artist parents Bindodebehari and Leela Mukherjee She studied painting at the MS University, Baroda 1965-1970, followed by a post-diploma in mural design under KG Subramanyan In 1971 Mukherjee received a British Council scholarship for sculpture and worked at the West Surrey College of art and design in Farnham, United Kingdom In 1994-95 she was invited by the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford to mount a major fibre sculptures exhibition She works with natural fibre which was gravely influenced by Subramanyan and was chosen to overcome the state polarity of Modernism in India Her first solo show was held in 1972 at the Shridharani Gallery in New Delhi She showcased extensively around Europe in several solo as well as group shows Her works are part of renowned collections at the Tate Modern, London, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi amongst others Mukherjee passed away recently in February 2015 due to a prolonged lung problem
