Artists Profile

Nalini Malani
Nalini Malani (b. 19 February 1946, Karachi, undivided India) is a pioneering Indian contemporary artist widely recognised for her innovative engagement with multimedia practices. Her work integrates drawing, painting, theatre, animation, video and installation, creating layered visual narratives that address memory, mythology and social history.
Born in Karachi shortly before the Partition of India, Malani’s family migrated first to Kolkata and later to Mumbai, experiences that profoundly shaped her artistic concerns with displacement, conflict and identity. She received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, in 1969, and later studied in Paris on a French Government scholarship between 1970 and 1972.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Malani has been among the earliest Indian artists to explore film, animation and video alongside painting and drawing. Her works frequently draw upon mythology, literature and history to examine themes of gender, violence and social injustice, often foregrounding the experiences of women and marginalised communities.
Malani has exhibited extensively across major international institutions and biennales, and her works are held in prominent collections worldwide. Regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary Indian art, Nalini Malani continues to develop an influential practice that bridges storytelling, political reflection and experimental visual language.
