Nataraj Sharma
Born in Mysore in 1958, Nataraj Sharma grew up in different countries like Egypt, England and Zambia While these hybrid experiences as an outlander instilled a sense of displacement and ambivalence, they also became the bedrock of his vast uncompromising visual vocabulary and added gravitas to his artistic range His art practice is influenced by a multiplicity of influences and, in essence offers incisive commentary about the complex relationship between humans, landscapes, and urbanisation His canvases are conjured with wit and are ruminative of the implications of a rapidly transforming urban environment The artist achieves this vision with a complex visual interplay and improvisation of varied elements, including memories, panoramic views, technology, detailed imagery, and nature Executed with a unique visual code that adds new connotations to already familiar imagery, these large-scale works are dramatic, broody, quiescent, and defiant, all at the same time Nataraj Sharma started his art education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda and graduated in 1982

Nataraj Sharma has worked in different mediums and genres, and his oeuvre is extremely rich both in content and form These include oil or acrylic painting, figures, portraits, as well as mixed media works and large-scale installations Inspired by the stalwarts of pop art like Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, Nataraj Sharma also drew inspiration from the members of India’s famous Progressive Artists’ Group Nataraj Sharma was awarded the Sotheby's Prize for the best emerging artist in the year 1993 and participated in an artist residency program at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) in 2006 His works have been a part of several solo and group exhibitions at prestigious museums and galleries
