Nikhil Chaganlal was born in Bombay in 1961 He is a self-taught artist who has developed a unique technique of working on Masonite, using a combination of acrylics, oil paints and chemical sealants He started exhibiting in 1998 and has been recognized as an important artist in the contemporary art scene

His works give the viewers a glimpse into his psyche which represents a disturbed childhood Primarily autobiographical in nature, it stands as a testament of his inward journey through the suggestive presence of people and objects from his past

The interiors that Nikhil conjures sometimes reveal emotions of restless sexuality while at other times evoke an aspiring spirituality With a palpable and lavish palette, Chaganlal’s paintings are reminiscent of childhood homes, expressing a vulnerability that is complemented by layers of decadence and fantasy His interiors are alive with objects and elaborate furnishings and reveal an innate desire for ease, intimacy and security

He has had several solo and group shows and his work is featured in many important collections He exhibited his works titled 'Intimate Vistas of the Interior' and '50 Revolutions Round the Sun' at Art Musings in Mumbai in 2010 and 2011

The artist lives and works in Goa
