Niren Sen Gupta, born in 1940 in Bengal, is a distinguished Indian modernist painter whose contemplative works explore spirituality, devotion, and the philosophical dimensions of human existence. His practice reflects a synthesis of modernist form with the spiritual traditions of India, placing him within the broader lineage of post-Independence artists who sought to reinterpret Indian identity through contemporary visual language.

Educated at the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata and the University of Calcutta, Sen Gupta developed a distinctive pictorial vocabulary characterised by structured compositions, vibrant colour palettes, and cubist figuration. His works frequently depict ascetics, monks, and solitary figures, rendered with a quiet introspection that echoes the meditative traditions of the Ramakrishna Mission, whose philosophical teachings have profoundly influenced his artistic vision.

Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, Sen Gupta has played an influential role in shaping India’s artistic and academic landscape. He served as Principal of the College of Art, New Delhi, mentoring generations of artists and contributing significantly to contemporary art education in India.

His paintings have been exhibited widely in India and abroad and are held in several important public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, South Korea Museum, Seoul, Belgium Religious Museum, China Academy of Painting, Beijing, Office of the Prime Minister of Japan, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Railway Board, New Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport among others. His works have also appeared in leading art auctions and various art galleries, reflecting the growing recognition of his contribution to Indian contemporary art.
