Entang Wiharso is an Indonesian artist born on 19th August 1967 in Tegal, Zentral-Java He studied painting at the Fine Art Department of the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta In his near mural size canvases and sculptures done in resin he synthesizes the traditional Indonesian art with pop-culture surrealism His work revolves around depicting the human condition be it love, hate, fanaticism, religion or ideology His personal experiences along with the socio-political circumstances of his country permeate into his work His sculptures in particular combine the traditional Indonesian Wayang puppet theatre and contemporary culture which creates a surreal effect His works often showcases a jumble of tendrils, vines and other vegetation tangled with the human body creating at times a chaotic effect In 1996 he became the youngest artist to receive a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia After his move to America in 1997 he also started exploring the theme of identity, what it meant for an Indonesian to live in America, and watch his sons grow up in a land which was not his own Some of his selected solo exhibitions include ‘Conversation: Endless Acts in Human History’ at Galerie Nasional, Indonesia in 2016, ‘Never Say No’ at Singapore Tyler Print Institute in 2015, ‘Entang Wiharso’ at Marc Straus, New York in 2015, ‘Crush me’ at Pearl Lam Galleries, Shanghai in 2013 and so on Apart from this he has also had group shows at various places like the Mori Art Museum, Japan, Singapore Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome to name a few In 2013 he was one of the five artists representing Indonesia at the Venice Biennial In 2019 he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts The artist now divides his time between Yogyakarta, Indonesia and Rhode Island, USA
