PN Choyal, born in 1924, was an artist renowned for his imaginative portrayal of the ruins of Rajasthan During his youth, Choyal discovered his passion for watercolors through the guidance of the esteemed artist Kalu Ram Sharma

Having completed his Fine Art Diploma and DTT from the School of Arts & Crafts in Jaipur, Choyal devoted himself to full-time artistry starting from 1948 He furthered his artistic education by obtaining a Government Diploma in Painting from Sir JJ School of Arts in Mumbai in 1953

In 1961-62, Choyal embarked on a transformative journey at the Slade College of Art in London This experience provided him with a fresh perspective on exploring the surface value and the interplay between form and space As he delved inward to discover new artistic values, his technique underwent a significant transformation Embracing the oil medium, the artist sought to synthesize the external world with his internal vision However, in 1974, his artistic career took a different path due to a prolonged illness This period brought about a shift in his artistic expression, with his colors adopting a somber tone and his lines being rendered on canvas in a random manner This marked the birth of a new style characterized by distinct designs and surfaces

Following his recovery, Choyal redirected his focus towards the hardships of life, particularly the plight of women in Rajasthan Witnessing their mistreatment deeply affected him, prompting him to create a series of artworks featuring walls, women, and the dissolution of the past These subjects held a profound captivation for the artist

For PN Choyal art was akin to meditation or yoga His artistic expressions evolved with each educational institution he attended, with every significant change in his life, and with the passage of time, wisdom, and his evolving perspectives on various subjects
