P T Reddy
Born in Annaram village in Telangana in 1915, artist Pakhal Tirumal Reddy belonged to a family of farmers Despite opposition from his family, the artist joined the Sir J J School of Art in 1939
In 1941, P T Reddy was a prominent member of the 'Young Turks', a group of five painters who were part of the 'Bombay Contemporary India Artists' It is noteworthy that this group was formed six years prior to the 'Progressive Artists' Group', which gained popularity in Mumbai in 1947
Initially, Reddy's style was realistic, but towards the end of the 1930s, he began to show his inventiveness in both style and presentation, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian art and Post-Impressionism He was also trained in mural painting and sought inspiration in Rajput and Pahari miniature paintings
In the 1940s, his art reflected his struggles with his Indian identity around the time of Independence After 1947, Reddy turned to India's artistic traditions to create a new style of his own He expressed his vision through complex compositions of realistic and expressionist portraits and impressionistic landscapes, engaging in a dialogue between contemporary life and politics By incorporating Buddhist, Hindu, and Tantric symbols into his work, Reddy's art became more abstract and universal in its appeal He skillfully employed line, colour, and medium to enhance the diversity of his themes His versatility, spirit, and creativity are evident in the diverse themes, mediums, and colours he employed in his art practice
P T Reddy was highly dedicated to his art and spent long hours in his studio, creating works in different media such as watercolours, oils, etchings, and sculptures His sculptures, in particular, are exceptional and unique to this day Around 1970, he began to explore Tantric style and themes inspired by Indian mythology
Reddy was a highly productive artist who received numerous awards, including the Dolly Cursetjee Award, as well as awards from the Academy of Fine Arts in Calcutta and the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Akademi In 1941, he was appointed as a fellow of the Sir J J School of Art The artist passed away in 1996
