Artists Profile

artist
Paramjit Singh
Born in 1935 in Amritsar, Punjab, Paramjit Singh is a distinguished Indian painter known for his evocative landscapes that reflect a deep engagement with nature. Growing up amidst the pastoral surroundings of Punjab, he developed an early sensitivity to the rhythms and textures of the natural world, a sensibility that has remained central to his artistic practice. Singh moved to New Delhi to pursue formal training and studied at the Delhi Polytechnic, where he completed a diploma in Fine Arts in 1958. Nearly a decade later, he furthered his artistic education by studying printmaking at Atelier Nord in Norway.

Singh’s paintings are marked by expansive, contemplative landscapes rendered with rich colour and tactile surfaces. His compositions often present panoramic views of fields, foliage and water, built through layered brushwork and dense applications of pigment. The surfaces of his canvases are animated by carefully articulated forms, from clusters of grass and leaves to the shimmering expanses of sky and water. These elements are arranged with a lyrical rhythm that lends his landscapes a quiet sense of movement and musicality.

Working across both realist and representational modes, Singh has consistently explored the meditative possibilities of landscape painting. His works evoke spaces removed from the pressures of urban life, offering instead tranquil environments that invite reflection and stillness. Over the years, his paintings have developed as part of an evolving continuum, each work extending his exploration of light, colour and natural form while maintaining a distinct individuality.

Paramjit Singh held his first solo exhibition at Triveni Gallery in New Delhi in 1967 and has since presented numerous solo shows across India and internationally. He continues to live and work in New Delhi.
