Paresh Maity
Born in Tamluk, West Bengal, in 1965, Paresh Maity is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist whose expansive practice spans painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and film. He received his formal training at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, graduating at the top of his class, and later at the College of Art, New Delhi. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Maity has developed a prolific and versatile body of work, gaining recognition for his mastery across mediums including watercolour, oil, acrylic, and mixed media.
Known for his adventurous and experimental approach, Maity continually explores new forms of artistic expression. His work is deeply informed by his engagement with the diverse landscapes, cultures, and spiritual traditions of India. From the vibrant deserts of Rajasthan to the contemplative atmosphere of Santiniketan, and from the historic splendour of Taj Mahal to the ancient murals of Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, his paintings rediscover the colour, rhythm, and spirit of the Indian landscape. Maity has also travelled widely, drawing inspiration from cities and cultures across the world, including London, Venice, China, and Japan.
Working across landscapes, abstractions, portraits, and figurative compositions, Maity’s art has been exhibited extensively through numerous solo shows around the world. His contributions to the arts have been recognised by several national and international institutions, including the Royal Watercolour Society, the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, and the British Council. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours.
Maity’s works are held in prominent public and private collections worldwide, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the British Museum, and the National Gallery of Modern Art. Among his major public projects is the monumental 850-foot mural created in 2010 for Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of the longest public artworks in India.
Through his constant experimentation and boundless curiosity, Paresh Maity continues to push the boundaries of contemporary Indian art, creating works that celebrate both the diversity of India and the universal language of visual expression. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
