Prabhakar Kolte
Prabhakar Kolte is a leading Indian abstractionist whose meditative and intuitive approach to painting has played an important role in shaping the trajectory of modern art in India. Born in Nerur Par, Maharashtra, Kolte developed an early interest in drawing by sketching religious figures from calendars during his childhood. His artistic inclination was further encouraged by the landscape painter Murlidhar Sadashiv Joshi, who guided him towards formal training. Kolte subsequently enrolled at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai and completed his diploma in painting in 1968, where he encountered the work of Paul Klee, an influence that would leave a lasting impression on his artistic outlook.

Early in his career Kolte worked as an illustrator and designer for Bombay Dyeing while continuing to pursue his own artistic practice. In 1972 he joined the faculty of the Sir J. J. School of Art, where he taught until 1994. During his tenure he mentored several artists who would later become prominent figures in contemporary Indian art. After leaving teaching, Kolte devoted himself entirely to painting and established himself as one of the country’s most respected practitioners of abstraction.

Kolte’s work evolved from early experiments with representational imagery and landscapes towards a deeply personal language of abstraction. By the mid 1980s he had moved decisively away from identifiable forms, focusing instead on the interplay of colour, texture and spatial relationships. His paintings often feature layered surfaces and fluid applications of paint that conceal and reveal subtle structures within the composition. Drawing inspiration from nature, spirituality and philosophical reflection, his works evoke a contemplative atmosphere that invites introspection.

Throughout his career Kolte has exhibited widely in India and internationally, with solo exhibitions at galleries in Mumbai, New Delhi, Munich and New York. His works form part of several important collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and major corporate collections in India. Beyond his own practice, Kolte’s influence as an educator and mentor has had a lasting impact on generations of artists, reinforcing his position as a significant figure in the development of contemporary Indian art.
