Prafulla Dahanukar
Prafulla Dahanukar was born on the 1st of January 1934, she studied fine art at the Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai and graduated with a Gold Medal in 1955 The Government of France awarded her a scholarship to study fine art in Paris in the year 1961, she returned to India after successful completion of her coursePrafulla Dahanukar was a well-renowned and eminent Indian artist She was an informal member of the Bombay Progressive Artists Group Her studio in Bhulabhai Institute in Breach Candy was next to the studio of MF Husain For a brief period of time artists VS Gaitonde and Prafulla shared a staudio as well Therefore one can observe traits of Gaitonde’s expression in the works of Prafulla’s He was quite fond of her and on one day, sketched her profile which is printed here for you to see She had her first solo show in the year 1956 Although she periodically painted portraits and still-life, the main theme of paintings in her later years were abstracted landscapes, which are depicted in her series such as ‘Mindscapes’ from the 1990s and ‘Eternal Space’ which she conceived in the 2000s From semi-realistic scapes in the 1980s, she eventually worked with a complete abstract temperament Her works are composed on the basis of a singular dormant colour with its subtle shades and nuances Her paintings have a unique quality of evoking different reactions depending on the mood of the viewer She passed away in the year 2014
