Prafulla Mohanti
Revered artist Prafulla Mohanti was born in Nanpur, Odish in 1936 He earned a degree in architecture from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai after which he joined Leeds University in UK where he graduated with a diploma in Town Planning Post this, he worked as an architect for the Greater London Council before leaving in 1970 to pursue art full-time
The artist is known for his association with the Neo-Tantra Art movement that reached its pinnacle in the 1960s He cites his early years spent in his village as a major influence in his works Here, he learnt about yoga, tantra and was taught to create the concentric circles that became a recurring motif in his later works The circles that initially were meant to represent Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, would evolve to the Bindu in his works - a symbol for the infinite Cosmos His works are rife with spirituality combining detailed structures and colours to depict Tantric elements such as mandalas
He has exhibited his works in several solo shows including Dhoomimal Art Centre in New Delhi (2014), Royal Festival Hall in London (1990), Chemould Gallery in Mumbai (1970) and Wakefield City Art Galler (1964) Group exhibitions he has participated in include Aicon Gallery in New York (2016), a travelling exhibition by National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi (1982), Burgh House Museum in London (1980)
His works are part of several permanent collections including that of The British Museum in London, Museum of Modern Art in Berkeley, Lalit Kala Academy in Delhi and Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata among others
