Pulak Sanpui
Pulak Sanpui was born in 1969, Kolkata He soon decided to move to Baroda to study at the Maharaja Sayajirao University He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Painting and got his Master’s Degree from the same university in Printmaking He also received a scholarship from the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad in the year 1999 He held his first solo exhibition at Nazar Art Gallery, Baroda in 2000 He has also participated in the Annual Exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1991 and 1996, the Annual Exhibition of the Birla Academy of Arts and Culture, Kolkata in 1996 and 1997 and the All India Exhibition of Art, Amritsar in 1997 He has been a part of several group exhibitions like ‘Cutting Chai’ at Sarjan Art Gallery, Vadodara in 2009, ‘Rainbows of Imagining’, Past Modern and Tumeric Earth, Mumbai and ‘Mapping Baroda’, Art Room, New Delhi to name a few Pulak Sanpui’s major source of inspiration is nature He particularly focuses on the prevalent flora and fauna of any place and depicts that in his work There is a tinge of exaggeration and drama in his work and he likes to unsettle the viewers by placing a mix of the flora and fauna from various regions sometimes local sometimes alien The artist states “My works looks free, spontaneous and vibrant on the surface but beneath this glitter lies my strong conviction to challenge my own notions of art and self-expression” He works in various mediums like oil, acrylic and watercolours He is also the visiting faculty at the Navrachna University, Baroda The artist currently lives and works in Baroda
