Ram Singh Urveti
Born in the year 1970, Ram Singh Urveti is from Patangarh in Madhya Pradesh Hugely inspired by Jagdish Swaminathan, Ram Singh Urveti is one of the key figures in Contemporary Tribal Indian Art His paintings hugely revolve around the Gond tribe prevalent in parts of Madhya Pradesh He has a particular fascination with trees and they become an irreplaceable part of most of his works Ram Singh Urveti had no formal education in art, he was exploring and depicting what he best knew, the spirit of these tribes He perfected his craft under Jangarh Singh Shyam who was, in turn, the protégé of the prominent artist J Swaminathan His career really began to take off after he received a mention in the 41st National Exhibition by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1998 He was awarded the South-Central Zone Cultural Centre Award for Tribal Art in 1998 and the Kalidas Award in 2001 He also did collaborative documentation called ‘The Night Life of Trees’ with Bhajju Shyam and Durga Bai for which they received the Bologna Ragazzi Award from ItalyHe has been a part of some notable exhibitions like ‘Chamatkar’, organized by CIMA art gallery, Calcutta at Hong Kong in 1996, ‘Contemporary Indian tribal popular art’ organized by Central Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris in 1998, ‘Anadi’ exhibition of Contemporary Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi in 2000 and ‘Shatabdi: Reflection of a Century Past’, CIMA, Kolkata in 2001, where Urveti’s work was exhibited alongside the works of Abanindranath Tagore, Ramkinkar Baij, MF Husain and other renowned Indian artists The artist lives and works in Bhopal
