Rana Begum
The work of London-based artist Rana Begum is a refined expression of minimalist abstraction Born in 1977 in Bangladesh, Rana Begum moved to England in 1983 She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and received an MA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2002
Rana Begum focusses on geometric shapes and repeated patterns, subliminally dissolving the lines between architecture, sculpture and painting Light is fundamental to her process Interweaving colour with light, she creates a visual experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial Her work is inspire by urban architecture and her childhood memories, which are reflected in her use of repetitive geometric patterns – found both within Islamic art and the industrial cityscape
She is greatly influenced by the work of artists such as Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Jesús Rafael de Soto and Tess Jaray Her works range from paintings, wall-based sculptures as well as large-scale spatial installations
Begum’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous private and public collections including the Government Art Collection, London; Arts Council Collection, London and many more She has undertaken residencies in Italy, Philippines, Beirut, Bangkok and continues to live and work in England
