Rekha Rao
A self-described colourist, Rekha Rao is a semi-abstract artist whose works are inspired by her environment Born in 1947 to prolific modernist, KK Hebbar, Rao grew up during a politically charged time in Mumbai Her household was a creative hotbed with influential artists such as members of the The Progressive Artists’ Group spent time From a young age, being surrounded by artists and mentored by her father, she developed an affinity for the arts Not to be restricted by a formal art education, Rao went on to study Indian History
Rao’s first exhibition was held in 1969 at Jehangir Art Gallery after which she moved to Los Angeles for two years Here, she developed an in-depth understanding of global art that would inform her practice upon her return to India During her time in the United States, she primarily created abstract art which would then evolve to become semi-abstract vibrant works Her inspirations for a large part of her oeuvre lie in her immediate surroundings - be it cities, villages, literature and other media She sees her surroundings as not just physical but also a spiritual experience Many of her frequently used motifs lie in the culture and socio-political conditions of India and the vast heritage of the country Her oeuvre focuses on the use of colours, lines, form and texture
Her richly layered narratives that are a response to events she has witnessed and her diverse childhood memories result in an immensely distinct style that is entirely her own The artist moved to Bangalore in 2003, and has continued to work and live in the city since
