Artists Profile

Roshan Chhabra
Born in 1983 in Vadodara, Gujarat, the contemporary artist Roshan Chhabra earned a BVA degree in Painting with a Gold medal in 2011 and an MVA in Painting with another Gold medal in 2013 from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda
Roshan's artistic expression is deeply rooted in his life experiences, having grown up in a middle-class Sindhi family His work reflects the constant expectations, personal and familial aspirations, sensibilities, and concerns inherent in his upbringing In recent years, the term 'middle-class' has become a defining adjective for Roshan's artistic process, choice of mediums, and forms His perspective is shaped by viewing the world through 'middle-class eyes,' employing a kitschy and borderline garish sensibility to depict subjects While humor and double meanings are present, the light-hearted portrayals carry an undercurrent of reservation and doubt about Roshan's life decisions The inclusion of text, both found and written by him, and the deliberate use of a 'peculiar' and questionable aesthetic serve as a means to challenge conventional notions of the 'good,' with misspellings and inconsistent conjugation placing Roshan on the precipice between two worlds
His artistic achievements include receiving the Gujarat Lalit Kala Award in 2008 and the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship for 2009-2010 Roshan held a solo exhibition at Gallery Maskara in Mumbai in 2013 and has participated in numerous group shows
Currently residing and working in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, Roshan continues to explore and express his unique artistic vision
