Saju Kunhan
Saju Kunhan received his BFA degree from the Government College of Fine Art, Thrissur, before pursuing his MFA in painting from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai In 2014, Kunhan received a Post-Graduate Diploma degree in Museology and Conservation from CSMVS Museum, Mumbai
Saju’s works are intensely personal, and represent the existence of a larger community He explores the themes of migration and displacement through his method of image transfers on teak wood He plays with historical memories to create works that chart his family’s past of migration, displacement, colonialism and conquest
Saju Kunhan is renowned for using photographs or maps juxtaposing them with drawings and engravings that transform their identity into a unique work of art “It is my general disposition,” says Kunhan, “to draw and colour over images Photographs and maps represent moments in history—I destroy the moment, adding and removing layers of identity from it In this work, I am rewriting history What you see ultimately is my manipulated version of it”
Kunhan had his first solo exhibition, Stained Geographies at TARQ, Mumbai in 2017 He has been a part of several group exhibitions since then
He currently lives and works in Mumbai
