Born in 1964, Sanjay Kumar is a painter and printmaker from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh He studied painting at the College of Arts and Crafts, Patna University in 1988 Kumar through his surrealistic style compositions brings together human figures and inanimate objects He tries to explore the physical and metaphysical quest of his inner world by utilising nature as his guiding force Through his works, Kumar engages in an intimate dialogue with the viewer by sharing his perspective on the positive and negative traits of human nature

Kumar has showcased his works in several exhibitions held at Nehru Center and Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai He also participated in group shows like Regional Art Exhibition, Lucknow (1989), Contemporary Artist of Bihar at Ravindra Bhavan, New Delhi (1989-1990) He has been honoured with several awards and grants including the Research Grant by Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi (1992-1993), the Junior Fellowship, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Culture, Government of India, (1995- 1997), Gold Medal for Youth festival by Government of Bihar, Patna (1985), Gold Medal for both Premchand Yuva Mahotsava and Kalakar Sanghrash Samiti, Patna
