Artists Profile

Seema Ghurayya
A celebrated abstract painter from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Seema Ghurayya pursued her National Diploma and Master’s in Painting at Jiwaji University, graduating in 1986.
After settling in Bhopal, she began collaborating with prominent post-Independence artists and developed a signature style rooted in minimalism and quiet introspection. Her work is known for its light, airy colours, sparse strokes, geometric lines, and abstract forms that evoke intangible experiences such as lightness, silence, and freshness, rather than literal imagery.
Ghurayya’s exhibitions spanned India and internationally, with solo shows in venues such as Kala Vithika (Gwalior), Chemould Art Gallery (Mumbai), Taj Art Gallery (Mumbai), and Gallery 7 (Mumbai, two-person show with S.H. Raza). She also participated in group shows across cities, including Indore, Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Dubai, Paris, Munich, and London. Her art has found its way into major collections like the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and numerous private collections.
She has received several prestigious awards, including the All India Kalidas Award (1985), honours from South Zone Culture Centre and Bharat Bhavan (1988), AIFACS (1995), and the Raza Foundation Award (2002). Ghurayya’s minimalistic approach conveyed deep emotional resonance through subtle, pared-back compositions.
Her passing in September 2020 marked the end of a luminous career, yet her serene and thoughtful visual voice continues to resonate with viewers worldwide.
