Seher Shah
Landscapes, spaces, objects and aesthetics form an integral part of Seher Shah’s art practice Born in Karachi in 1975, Seher Shah received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998
Seher Shah uses printmaking, sculpture and drawing to explore the relationship between culture, history, poetry and abstraction Her work is an intersection of art and architecture It reflects symmetry and juxtaposition in which separate entities are unified in one space and yet retain their distinct individuality
Using graphite and gouache on paper, she creates black-and-white drawings which depict architectural facades superimposed with delicate markings and multicultural motifs The cultural and religious icons that appear in her work have no symbolic meaning and are simply used as elements of composition
Shah’s exploration of the sculptural domain probes and pushes our understanding of the architectural space and challenges the traditional parameters of perspective
An artist of a highly complex demeanor, Shah has held several solo and group exhibitions showcasing her dynamic works Her work is in the collections internationally renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Schaffhausen, Switzerland among several others
She currently lives and works in Brooklyn
