artist
Senaka Senanayake
Senaka Senanayake (b. 1951, Colombo) is one of Sri Lanka’s most widely recognised contemporary artists, celebrated for his vibrant depictions of tropical landscapes and rainforest ecosystems. A child prodigy whose artistic talent was recognised at an early age, he held his first exhibition while still a schoolboy and went on to exhibit internationally from a young age.

Senanayake studied Art and Architecture at Yale University, graduating in 1972, after which he returned to Sri Lanka and committed himself fully to painting. Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, establishing an international reputation for his distinctive visual language.

Central to Senanayake’s practice is a profound engagement with the natural environment. His richly coloured compositions, populated by lush vegetation, exotic birds, insects, and wildlife, celebrate the biodiversity of Sri Lanka while drawing attention to the ecological challenges facing the region. Balancing aesthetic exuberance with environmental advocacy, his paintings function simultaneously as celebrations of nature and reflections on its fragility.

Characterised by luminous colour, intricate detail, and dynamic compositions, Senanayake’s work conveys an enduring sense of wonder at the natural world. His paintings are held in important public, corporate, and private collections internationally. The artist continues to live and work in Colombo.
