Sudhangsu Bandyopadhyay (b. 1949, Kolkata) is an Indian modern artist known for his richly textured abstract landscapes and an intensely expressive approach to colour. He received his Diploma in Western Painting from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata, and subsequently continued his studies in the Department of History of Art and Art Appreciation at Calcutta University.

Bandyopadhyay’s practice is distinguished by thick, layered applications of pigment, in which vibrant reds, blues and chrome yellows collide with deep black and brown passages. These dense areas often appear to form elusive structures or fragmented landscapes, which are gradually submerged beneath sweeping expanses of tempered white. Through this interplay of colour, texture, light and absence, the artist creates works that occupy a space between abstraction and landscape.

At the heart of Bandyopadhyay’s work is a dynamic relationship between emotion, thought, sensation and illusion. His bold reds and blacks possess a particular intensity, at times evoking energy and ecstasy, while his layered surfaces create a sense of movement and depth. Forms emerge and recede within the composition, allowing the viewer to experience the landscape not as a fixed reality but as an evolving field of memory, sensation and imagination.

Working across oil, acrylic, watercolour and lithography, Bandyopadhyay has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in experimentation with material and colour. His works have been exhibited in India and Germany and have been featured in the National Exhibition as well as the Painting and Indian Print Biennial.
