Suman Gupta
The abstract-realist painter Suman Gupta was born in the year 1964 Suman Gupta is a self-taught artist who is a Bachelor of Commerce and later got his Bachelor’s in Law from the University of Jammu In the year 1997, he was awarded a scholarship in drawing by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi Suman Gupta is known for blending the real with the surreal and lending his work a dreamlike quality HIs works can be compared to the Magical realism movement in literature What we see in his works are pristine landscapes besotted with colours, forms and lightHe had his debut solo exhibition in 1991 at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai His first international solo exhibition was titled ‘The Mountain Mysteries’ held at Palais des Nations, United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland in the year 2002 His ‘Secret Garden’ series of acrylic and tempera were showcased at Gallery Espoonsilta, Finland in 2012 He was invited to participate in the 8th edition of Florence Biennale where he won the ‘Lorenzo IL Magnifico’ award in 2011 He had the honour of being elected as one of the jury members for the 57th National exhibition of Art by the Lalit Kala Akademi He was also honoured with the National Academy Award for his work ‘Blue River and the God of Fish’ in 2006 and the J&K state award in 1998 He has been commissioned to do several works over the years for places like the ‘Palace of Patiala’, Jammu Airport, Hotel Ashok, New Delhi, Raj Bhawan in Jammu and so on
