Surendran Nair
Fusing traditional with contemporary imagery, like political caricatures and cinema posters, works by Surendran Nair are inspired by surrealism and are done in various mediums ranging from watercolour to printmaking and oils Born in Kerala in 1956, Surendran Nair studied painting from the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, and later also did a printmaking course from M S University, Vadodara
Starting with pen and ink drawings, etching and lithography, Nair's early career saw him primarily focusing on portraits Later he started to work heavily in oils, leading to his fascination with "corollary mythologies" which depicted the age-old mythological fables in a contemporary context This preoccupation also led to a series of hand coloured etchings in the late 1990s titled “The Labyrinth of Eternal Delight” Not only for his beautiful paintings, the artist is also known for the long whimsical titles he renders to his artworks Through his career, Surendran Nair has participated in various group and solo exhibitions in India and across the world, including Centre Genevois de Gravure Contemporaine, Geneva, Delphina Studio Gallery, London and Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai to name a few The artist lives and works in Vadodara, Gujarat
