Suryakant Lokhande was born in Mumbai in 1969. Passionate about art from an early age, he studied at the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990. Following his studies, he worked with advertising agencies including Lintas and Ogilvy & Mather, where he gained an understanding of the relationship between art, design and media. This experience contributed to the development of his visual language and artistic sensibilities.

Employing a visual vocabulary that draws upon elements of Pop Art, popular culture and photographic imagery, Lokhande examines contemporary life through images drawn from the material and media-driven world. His compositions frequently incorporate photographs, found imagery, toys, cartoons, text and other elements of popular visual culture. Characterised by vibrant, neon-inflected colours, his works explore the relationship between consumerism, popular imagery and contemporary society. Female protagonists frequently appear in his compositions, portrayed with confidence and an assertive sense of individuality, often removed from conventional social contexts.

Lokhande has exhibited extensively in India and internationally through solo and group exhibitions. His work has been presented in cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, London, Paris, Tokyo and Berlin. Over the course of his career, he has received several awards and grants, including the Charles Wallace India Trust scholarship in 1997 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2003, alongside recognition from the Bombay Art Society and State Art Awards.

Several of Lokhande’s sculptures have also been installed in public spaces. Among his notable public works is The Camera Man, created in collaboration with the RPG Art Foundation and installed outside Mehboob Studios in Bandra. The work reflects Lokhande’s engagement with Mumbai’s cinematic culture and his interest in translating familiar images and objects from everyday life into large-scale sculptural forms.

Through his engagement with popular imagery, photography, advertising and sculpture, Lokhande has developed a practice that bridges fine art and the visual culture of contemporary urban life. His works continue to explore the ways in which media, consumer imagery and everyday experience shape perceptions of modern society.
