T Vaikuntam
Born in 1942 in Boorugupalli in undivided Andhra Pradesh, Thota Vaikuntam is celebrated for his distinctive depictions of rural life in Telangana. He completed a Diploma in Painting from the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad, in 1970, followed by another diploma in Painting and Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 1972. Vaikuntam held his first solo exhibition at Kala Bhavan in Hyderabad in 1973.

Vaikuntam’s early artistic influences stemmed from calendar art and mythological scenes painted on scrolls and village walls. The egalitarian social structure of his village, where caste divisions were less pronounced, left a lasting impression on him. The rustic environment and the lives of farmers, labourers and village women engaged in everyday activities became recurring subjects in his work, reflecting the dignity and rhythm of rural existence.

Men and women from his village often occupy the centre of Vaikuntam’s compositions, with Telangana women emerging as particularly iconic figures within his oeuvre. This fascination traces back to his childhood, when he was captivated by travelling theatre groups in which male performers impersonated female characters. The memory of these performances continues to inform his artistic imagination. In his paintings, women appear sensuous yet dignified, embodying vitality and strength.

Vaikuntam’s works are characterised by bold outlines, bright primary colours and controlled brushwork. His figures, especially the women he portrays, are rendered with lustrous dark skin, sturdy bodies shaped by labour, and adorned with flowers and traditional jewellery. These striking visual elements create images that are both monumental and intimate, celebrating the vibrancy of rural culture.

Another important influence on his practice was the children’s cultural centre, Jawahar Bal Bhavan in Hyderabad, where Vaikuntam worked as an art teacher for fifteen years. Alongside his career as a painter, he also contributed to cinema as an art director, notably for the Telugu film Dasi (1988–89), which received a National Award.
Recognised as one of the leading contemporary artists from Telangana, Vaikuntam was awarded the National Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1993. He continues to live and work in Hyderabad, and his paintings remain celebrated for their powerful portrayal of regional identity and rural life.
