Theodore Mesquita was born in Goa in the year 1967 He went on to study Fine Arts (Painting) from the University of Mumbai and graduated in the year 1988 He finished his Post-Graduation from the MS University Baroda in 1990 After his Post-Graduation, he received the national fellowship from the Government of India in 1993 He was an artist in residence at the Centro de Arte e Communicaco Visual, Lisbon, Portugal in 1998 In 2013 he was invited to be the resident artist and exhibited his works at The Script Road Art festival in Macau He was also invited by the Shangyuan Art Museum, Beijing for their artist residency program in the year 2014 With a keen urge for further development and propagation of visual art in his native Goa, he formed the ‘The Goan Art Forum’ in 1990 to bring together like-minded artists in Goa Theodore is primarily a figurative artist and explores the question of identity through his work He lends meaning to them by using various signs and symbols in his work, giving them the proper cultural appropriation In the year 2000, he won the Excellence award: Emerging Artist of India at the Harmony show He also received a Diploma laureate from St Petersburg State Academy of Art and Design, Russia in 2012 He has participated in several group shows like the 3rd and 6th Bharat Bhavan Biennale of Contemporary Indian art and the 7th Triennale, Lalit Kala Akademi In the past, he has served as a lecturer for subjects such as Art History, Drawing and Painting at the Goa College of Art The artist currently lives and works in Goa
