Vasundhara Tewari Broota
Born in 1955 in the city of Kolkata, Vasundhara Broota is a renowned Indian contemporary artist She moved to Delhi at the young age of fifteen and chose to study Literature at the University of Delhi Simultaneously she also studied art at Triveni Kala Sangam under Rameshwar Broota In 1982 she was awarded a cultural scholarship by the Department of Culture, Government of India From 1996-98 she was awarded the Senior Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India Her works are predominantly figurative in nature and present a commentary of woman’s agency in the current socio-political scenario Her works are a part of important collections all over the world including National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Peabody Museum, USA; Tehran Museum of Art, Iran; MOMA, San Francisco and Bharat Bhavan Museum, BhopalShe had her first solo exhibition in 1980 at the Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi Since then she has exhibited at various places like Pundole, Calcutta Art Gallery and the University of Illinois, Chicago Since the year 1979, she has regularly participated in the National Exhibitions organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi Her latest group show was an exhibition organised by the Raza foundation in the memory of SH Raza’s 97th birth anniversary It took place at the National Gallery of Modern Art in February 2019 She has been the recipient of several awards including a silver medal at the first International Biennale, Algiers in 1987, the Sanskriti Award in 1987 as well as the Sahitya Kala Parishad in 1982, 1987 and 1996 The artist currently lives and works in New Delhi
