Ved Nayar
Artist Ved Nayar was born in Lyallpur, Punjab, in 1933 During the partition, his family relocated to New Delhi, where he completed his graduation at St Stephen's College in 1952 Following that, he pursued a diploma in fine arts from the National College of Fine Art in 1957, showcasing his artwork at the prestigious national exhibition held at the Lalit Kala Akademi
A close relationship with a jungle near his childhood was one of the earliest inspirations for the artist “My first relationship in my life, outside my house, began with this jungle Somewhere, sometime during this relationship with the jungle, I think, the desire to express was born in me,” the artist has said about the same
Initially, Nayar focused on painting, but over time, he explored various mediums such as sculpture, installation, archival digital print, and photography His early works depicted abstract origins infused with ritual undertones, gradually evolving into iconic representations of elongated human forms, predominantly women, existing in the space between earth and sky Nayar's art encourages viewers to contemplate the human form and its relationship with the environment, provoking thoughts on their interconnection Nayar's artistic endeavours are also deeply influenced by other environmental concerns, particularly the impact of cultural globalisation and mass consumerism Since the 1980s, Nayar's creative expressions have been driven by a strong desire to craft environments that complement his sculptures Drawing holds a significant place in Nayar's artistic practice
In 1981, Nayar received a national award from the Lalit Kala Akademi for his sculpture titled "Mankind-2110" He has also held numerous solo exhibitions featuring his paintings, sculptures, and installations in India, as well as participated in various group and international exhibitions Additionally, Nayar has actively engaged in workshops and art camps, both nationally and internationally His works are esteemed additions to several public and private collections worldwide
