Wasim Kapoor
Wasim Kapoor was born in the year 1951 He received his Diploma in Fine arts in 1971 from Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship In the year 1984, he received two awards, from the Government of West Bengal and from the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata respectively In the year 1985, he received the Shiromoni Award from Asian Paints The artist has also participated in countless solo and group exhibitions In 1990 he participated in the Third Biennale of Contemporary Indian Art in Bhopal and from 1989-91 showcased his work in the National Exhibition of Arts, New Delhi and the Annual Exhibition of Gallerie 88 in Kolkata In the year 1992, he also participated in the ‘Exhibition of Contemporary Art’ at Kassel, Germany and Lyons and Marseilles, FranceHis works often take a dark turn because of the themes they address The artist himself claims that “Ninety per cent of my work is about the suffering of women and their problems” He is greatly inspired by the Dutch artist Rembrandt and his works are mostly figurative in nature He had a documentary made on him titled ‘Vision Unveiled’ in 2010 produced by Manibrata Das The film traces the trauma that Kapoor underwent when he lost the use of both of his legs as a child but still persevered and garnered fame as an artist In fact, Wasim had impressed quite a lot of people early on in his career and the renowned artist Debiprasad Roy Choudhury even offered to write the introduction to the catalogue of Wasim Kapoor’s first solo exhibition held in Kolkata The artist still lives and works in Kolkata
