Artists Profile

artist
Yashwant Deshmukh
Born in 1963 in Akola, Maharashtra, Yashwant Deshmukh earned a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai in 1988

His art is fueled by everyday objects such as buckets, cups, and panels, which he incorporates into his pieces Through these elements, he delves into the philosophy of space and form The shapes he creates generate unseen planes, and it's the interplay between these planes and the negative space around them that drives his artistic passion

He primarily works with acrylic on canvas and enjoys the transparency that allows the canvas surface to show through and the permanent nature of each layer added The artist mostly employs greyish colours to define the tone and intensity of space, as he often aims to depict the lack of movement or the lifelessness and stillness of space Occasionally, colour serves as a negative space in the painting, despite its primary purpose being to depict the nature and state of the form

In a nearly 20-year career, he has achieved many milestones, including winning the Bendre-Husain Scholarship in Mumbai (1993) and participating in the 3rd Bose Pacia Modern Biennial in New York (2001)

Deshmukh's notable solo shows include "Regarding the Cone" (Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2008), "Circling the Mountain of Light" (Bombay Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2008), "Maverick of Inert" (Shridharani Gallery, Delhi, 2007), and "Space Within" (Bombay Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2006) He has also been part of group exhibitions such as "Vicissitudes of the Constructed Image" (Tangerine Art Space, Bangalore, 2009), "Homage to Matter" (Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2009), "Does Size Matter" (Art Konsult, Delhi, 2007), "Imprints" (Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, 2007), and "Understanding Oneness in Diversity" (Kitab Mahal, Mumbai, 2007) In 2007, he had a joint show with Yogesh Rawal at Viart, Delhi
