Artists Profile

artist
Zarina Hashmi
Zarina Hashmi (1937–2020) was an Indian-born printmaker and sculptor whose work is widely recognised for its profound exploration of home, displacement, memory, borders, and belonging. Born in Aligarh, she graduated in Mathematics from Aligarh Muslim University in 1958 before embarking on a life shaped by migration and travel, experiences that would become central to her artistic practice.

Hashmi studied intaglio printmaking under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris between 1963 and 1967, and later trained in woodblock printing at the Toshi Yoshida Studio in Tokyo. Settling in New York in the late 1970s, she developed a distinctive visual language rooted in geometry, architecture, and the tactile qualities of paper. Her minimalist aesthetic was informed by both an early interest in mathematics and a lifelong engagement with questions of identity and place.

Working across intaglio, woodcut, lithography, paper constructions, and sculpture, Hashmi transformed personal histories of migration into evocative meditations on exile and memory. Landmark series such as Home is a Foreign Place, Maps, Homes and Itineraries, and Countries reflect her enduring interest in the relationship between language, geography, and belonging. Widely exhibited internationally, she represented India at the 2011 Venice Biennale and remains a pivotal figure in contemporary South Asian art.
