The impressive and highly elaborate carved Shodana is surmounted by a dramatic pierced crest centred on a powerful phoenix (hō-ō) with outstretched wings, carved in high relief against a dense ground of scrolling clouds and foliate forms Beneath, an arched niche is animated by finely modelled dragons, their sinuous bodies deeply undercut and almost fully sculptural. The interior features delicately incised bamboo-carved back panels set against a textured ground, with an asymmetrical arrangement of shelves supported by a naturalistic tree-form vertical strut carved with blossoms and pierced detailing. The exterior uprights and base are richly worked with entwined dragons and scrolling motifs, the pierced apron and cabriole legs lending both lightness and architectural strength.A commanding example of Japanese decorative wood carving, conceived as both a functional display cabinet and a statement of ceremonial craftsmanship.
