Figurative art aims to capture and convey a visual representation of the subject matter. Artists in India have incorporated various styles and approaches, from realistic depictions to more stylised or interpretive portrayals. Our upcoming auction, ‘Manifest,’ will feature notable figurative works by eminent artists such as Sakti Burman, Bikash Bhattacharjee, and M F Husain, among others. Shared below are five figurative works from our upcoming auction, scheduled for September 24-26, 2024

Lot No. 16: Untitled by K H Ara

K H Ara, a prominent member of the Bombay-based Progressive Artist Group (PAG), began his art career with landscapes and paintings. He played a crucial role in the development of modern art in India. The presented lot is an oil on canvas by the artist executed during the early phase of his career, circa 1945. In this work, Ara captures a lively reception or party scene, where people dressed in vibrant clothes engage in conversation, creating a tapestry of social interaction.

Lot No. 55: Untitled (The Torch) by Ganesh Pyne

Ganesh Pyne works are a reflection of his childhood memories and fears which played a significant role in his paintings. His work frequently features warriors and symbols of heroism, evoking ancient associations
with the establishment of idealistic values. The presented lot is a tempera on canvas work by Ganesh Pyne, executed in 2003, depicting a torch-bearer.

Lot No. 73: Untitled by M F Husain

The presented lot is an oil on canvas work by M F Husain, executed circa 1960. M. F. Husain’s paintings often reflect his deep connection to his early life experiences and the cultural milieu that shaped him. This painting depicts three faceless figures that are a poignant symbol of memory, loss, and identity in Husain’s work. It evokes the essence of the people and community from Pandharpur, where Husain spent his formative years.

Lot No. 140: Durga by Bikash Bhattacharjee

The presented lot titled “Durga” is an oil on canvas work, executed in 1988 by Bikash Bhattacharjee, depicting the strength of Durga in every woman. Bikash grew up on the streets of Kolkata, witnessing traditional artists make clay idols of goddesses for Durga Puja. His memories and inspirations became instrumental in the making of his famous Durga series of paintings.

Lot No. 219: Three Women by Sakti Burman

Executed in 1961, the presented lot titled “Three Women” is an oil on canvas work by Sakti Burman. The painting reflects Burman’s deep longing for India, reflected through a vivid portrayal of three women adorned in bright traditional attire. This work exemplifies Burman’s mastery of figuration and highlights how his connection to Indian culture remained strong despite his relocation to France.
