anish kapoor : the subversive sculptor

Anish Kapoor, a renowned sculptor with British-Indian heritage, was born in Mumbai, India, in 1954. He has left an indelible mark on the world of conceptual art, captivating audiences globally with his monumental sculptures and installations that deftly manipulate depth and dimension. His work commands attention, inviting viewer participation due to its sheer scale, vibrancy, and the profound exploration of materiality and immateriality. Kapoor credits both Eastern and Western influences for shaping his artistic vision, contributing to the rich tapestry of his creative journey. Among his most acclaimed installations are Cloud Gate, a bean-like reflective sculpture in Chicago’s Millenium Park. Marsyas, another monumental work by Kapoor, was a 10 storey-high double trumpet shaped sculpture made of bright red PVC to depict music visually.

Kapoor's artistic journey began when he relocated to London in 1970 to pursue his studies in art. During this early phase, he primarily experimented with bold powdered pigments to create striking geometric shapes. However, as the 1990s unfolded, he embarked on a transformative path, exploring diverse materials such as stainless steel, PVC, and fiberglass. This evolution marked his transition into a realm where he emulated voids in physical spaces and distorted reflective surfaces into captivating concave and convex forms, skillfully traversing the realms of both optics and metaphysics. Also notable in his oeuvre are sculptures executed with blood-red wax, flung and regenerated by mechanical devices, adding a dynamic and provocative aspect to his body of work. His most revered series of small-scale sculptures are the stainless steel discs he creates, that reflect the viewer and distort the images it reflects.

Among his many diverse series, one of his most acclaimed is his series of stainless steel discs that manipulate and distort what they reflect. The various treatments used on these discs change the distortions, encouraging its viewers to not only interact with them but also contemplate their image.

Anish Kapoor has exhibited his works widely throughout the world. Some of the notable galleries he has exhibited in include Lisson Gallery, London; Houghton Hall, Norfolk; Reina Sofia, Madrid; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Brazil; Guggenheim, New York City and Musée des arts contemporains (Grand-Hornu); Belgium among several others.
