AstaGuru’s ‘Present Future’ auction, taking place on the 7th and 8th of May 2025, offers a compelling overview of the current landscape of contemporary Indian art. This curated catalogue features works by some of the most dynamic and innovative artists practising today, whose works respond to themes of identity, materiality, history, and social engagement. Artists featured include Anish Kapoor, Nataraj Sharma, Valay Shende, L N Tallur, and Senaka Senanayake, among others. Presented below are highlights from the upcoming auction:
• Lot no. 37 – Untitled by Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor’s large-scale installations explore themes of void, space, and perception, often through the use of reflective or intensely pigmented surfaces. The presented lot, created in 2007 using acrylic, plexiglas, and paint, embodies these elements on a monumental scale. Its immersive quality challenges the viewer’s spatial awareness, characteristic of Kapoor’s conceptual approach.
• Lot no. 24 – Untitled (Edition of 6) by Anish Kapoor

This 2005 bronze and lacquer sculpture demonstrates Anish Kapoor’s interest in surface, depth, and negative space. Executed in a limited edition, it conveys a meditative presence despite its compact form. The use of lacquer heightens the sculpture’s material richness and tactile quality.
• Lot no. 48 – Swimmers Manual by Nataraj Sharma

Known for his layered approach to figuration and landscape, Nataraj Sharma often references industrial and environmental settings in his work. The presented oil and mixed media painting from 2018 evokes a manual or diagrammatic format, playing with structure and abstraction to reflect on human interaction with natural and built spaces.
• Lot no. 17 – Spy In The House Of Love (Diptych) by Nataraj Sharma

This early 2000s diptych exemplifies Nataraj Sharma’s narrative technique. Painted in oil on canvas, it invites speculation through its layered imagery and evocative title. The large format underscores the emotional and psychological themes explored within.
• Lot no. 36 – Untitled by Senaka Senanayake

Senaka Senanayake is celebrated for his vibrant depictions of tropical flora and fauna, often addressing ecological concerns. The 2012 acrylic on canvas work offered here features dense, lush vegetation rendered in his signature palette, reflecting both beauty and urgency.
• Lot no. 06 – Hulk by Valay Shende

Valay Shende’s sculptural practice bridges contemporary visual culture with craft traditions. The presented 2018 work, created using stainless steel discs and plated fibreglass, reimagines the pop culture icon Hulk in an industrial material vocabulary, transforming a symbol of brute strength into a detailed and reflective surface.
• Lot no. 08 – Milled History (Mirror) by L N Tallur

L N Tallur’s work often fuses historical references with sculptural innovation. The 2015 sandstone sculpture presented here resembles a mirror, suggesting both introspection and distortion. His use of stone reflects a dialogue between permanence and reinterpretation in the contemporary moment.
