chronicling mythos through modern indian art

Modern Indian art often draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of mythology, weaving age-old tales and deities into unique artistic expressions. This fusion of tradition and innovation creates a captivating dialogue, bridging cultural heritage with the masterful artistic techniques of eminent modernists. These artists’ re-envisioning of myths, gods, and epic narratives reflect personal interpretations through visual languages that are distinct and innovative. The theme of mythology in modern Indian art serves as a vibrant canvas exploring ancient beliefs and inviting viewers to explore the eternal connection between storytelling and artistic evolution. Presented below are notable works from AstaGuru’s upcoming auction that are acclaimed Indian modernists’ take on mythology.

Lot 23 : Untitled by K Laxma Goud

The presented untitled work comes from the oeuvre of versatile modernist, K Laxma Goud. His fascination with exploring the relationships between humans, nature and mythology is evident in this acrylic on canvas work executed in 2017. The painting is inspired by The Last Supper scene, depicted in bold hues and in Goud’s distinct style.

Lot 30 : Killing Of Jatayu (Ed : 1/9) by Krishen Khanna

Some of modernist Krishen Khanna’s most famous works have arisen from his deep interest in mythology, allegory and the human condition. His artistic prowess translated to the presented sculpture where he depicts the scene of the slaying of Jatayu from the epic Ramayana.

Lot 31 : Untitled (Ganesha) by Jogen Chowdhury

Depicted in the signature style of Jogen Chowdhury, the presented lot is a large-scale acrylic and pastel on canvas work executed in 2022. The unbroken lines, animated expression and caricature-esque features all amalgamate to form the iconic imagery of Ganesha.

Lot 42 : A) Untitled (Christ) (Ed : 2/5) B) Untitled (Christ)

Acclaimed sculptor Himmat Shah executed the presented sculpture in 2017. The monumental bronze head sculpture of Christ is a testament to Shah’s depth and versatile creativity. While he has explored the theme of heads in the past, with this 8-feet-tall sculpture, he has ventured into engaging with religious iconography. Both the acrylic on canvas work and bronze sculpture bring together traditional themes with contemporary perspectives.

Lot 44 : Untitled by Thota Vaikuntam

The presented lot is an awe inspiring painting by Thota Vaikuntam and perfectly captures the essence of his art practice which is informed by the simple yet profound moments that define life in rural areas. The large-scale composition features Lord Nataraj, the cosmic dancer, surrounded by thirty villagers enjoying festivities. This is a departure from the usual compositions by the artist which chronicle quiet interactions between his protagonists.
