Gerald Genta: The Trailblazing Genius Behind Iconic Timepieces
Anandita Bhardwaj | 19 Oct, 2022
Synonymous with some of the greatest timepieces of the modern era, Gerald Charles Genta was a trailblazer in the watchmaking industry. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1931, he started his career as a goldsmith and jeweller before being recruited by one of the most renowned watchmaking manufacturers Universal Geneve. He worked there till the mid-sixties and garnered widespread acclaim for his SAS Polerouter design which he executed at the young age of 23. After his association with the company till the mid-sixties, he was approached by several world’s leading watch brands which led to the creation of some of the most iconic pieces.
In its upcoming auction, AstaGuru will present a fascinating collection of watches that was envisioned by Gerald Genta. One of these is a timepiece from the famous Constellation series by Omega. Redefining this flagship collection of Omega established Gerald Genta’s name as a ‘star designer.’ In the upcoming auction, lot no. 55 is a Constellation Double Eagle Perpetual Calendar Wristwatch Ref No. 1213.30.00 created in Circa 2000 - 2009. The timepiece with a quartz movement features a gold and steel case with a silvered dial cover. The two-tone gold & steel bracelet includes a steel double-fold clasp. This lot will be presented with the original box.
In the year 1970, Genta created the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. As the story goes, the designer was asked by the brand to conceive the new design within a day, and he completed the task by executing his ideas in sketches overnight. Inspired by a vintage diving helmet, the designer rendered an octagonal shape to the piece. The first luxury sports watch to be made out of steel, the creation changed the course of the watchmaking industry and revolutionised it. Since then, the company has celebrated the iconic watch with many series and special editions. The curation for the timepieces category in AstaGuru includes four fascinating versions of the Royal Oak. While the design and the prototype were completed the same, the watch was introduced in 1972 after the start of industrial production. This makes the year 2022 the 50th anniversary of this legendary timepiece.

In 1976, upon the request of Phillippe Patek, the designer executed the Nautilus, which continues to be one of the most coveted timepieces from the brand. As the story goes, he sketched the watch in five minutes on a paper napkin in a restaurant. Named in a tribute to Captain Nemo’s submarine in Jules Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” the watch was inspired by the portholes of the transatlantic ships.
Lot no. 85 in the upcoming auction is a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Wristwatch Ref No. 5167 with a rounded octagon case, inspired by that of the Nautilus.
